Interview by Lon Woodbury

Dr. Robert Melillo is the co-founder of the Brain Balance Success Centers and the Brain Balance Program. In an interview with the CEO of strugglingteens.com Lon Woodbury on L.A. Talk Radio, he shared exactly how his work is helping parents of Autistic children find better means to resolve problems associated with Autism. In addition, he discussed how to diagnose and treat ADHD, Dyslexia, and Asperger's Syndrome.

About Dr. Melillo

Dr. Robert Melillo is an internationally known lecturer, author, educator, researcher and clinician; a specialist in neurology, rehabilitation, neuropsychology and neurobehavioral disorders in children; and the co-founder of the Brain Balance Achievement Centers, which uses a multi-modal approach to the remediation of ADHD, dyslexia, autism, Asperger's, Tourette's, and other neurobehavioral disabilities found in children.

Dr. Melillo has authored three books on brain imbalances in children. His first book was "Disconnected Kids." His second book was "Reconnected Kids." Now his recently published third book is "Autism: The Scientific Truth About Preventing, Diagnosing, and Treating Autism Spectrum Disorders-- and What Parents Can Do Now."

New Optimism for Parents of Autistic Children:

The interview discussed recent discoveries in understanding Autism, many of which are helping to establish a completely new view about Autism and its treatment.

There is a growing body of evidence to indicate that the steady increase in autism seems to be primarily due to environmental causes. "We are seeing significant increases," explained Dr. Melillo, "which means that the only way you can explain it is through environmental factors."

Even accounting for the rise in improved diagnosis and a change in the classification of diagnostic criteria, the increase in autism and other learning disorders has increased at a significant pace.

Dr. Melillo provided a thoughtful description of the causes behind the increase in Autism and he spoke about scientifically-based methods for prevention and treatment. He recommended numerous important steps to reduce the high rate of Autism. These steps consist of pre-conception and pre-natal preparation by the mother as well as early diagnosis to enable correct intervention.

He said that parents could no longer afford to simply make a spontaneous decision to have a child. This type of thinking had to become a thing of the past. Just two years back, the chance of having a kid with Autism was 1 in 10,000 while today it is 1 in 10. Autism could be prevented by keeping tabs on biomarkers and initiating a preparation period before motherhood that included stress-reduction, exercise, and proper nutrition.

Since disorders like ADHD, Autism, Asperger's Syndrome, Tourette's Syndrome, PDD-NOS, and Dyslexia revealed striking similarities, these learning disorders are now considered points on a typical spectrum. Where the kid falls on the spectrum is dependent on the seriousness of the imbalance and the particular areas effected within the brain.

Besides a discussion of his work in diagnosing, treating, and preventing autism been helping would-be parents and parents of autistic children cope with a very difficult condition, the interview included the difference between the brains of men and women, how Autism often led to both gifts and deficits, and the proper role of diagnosis in helping those with Autism.
